Fentress County Tennessee has no homeless shelter, yet there are an estimated 50 individuals living without a fixed address within the city limits alone. Hundreds more are facing eviction, while many others live in their vehicles, sheds, and RVs, often without access to electricity or running water.

Homelessness looks different in a rural area. It’s not as obvious, but it’s very real. The Community House was formed in 2024 to address this issue in Fentress County. We are a nonprofit 501(3)C, led by a board of amazing community leaders.

Our goal is a physical location with services supporting a return to independence … But until a physical location is established, The Community House is making an impact on the community by partnering with other local, like-minded organizations — both public and private — to fill gaps in critical services and support. The Community House is currently staffed entirely by volunteers and funded solely by donations from the community.

VISION

In collaboration with a network of community and regional partnerships, the Community House will work to provide under-represented and displaced persons, regardless of race, gender, or religion, with direct access to temporary housing, food, and comprehensive services including life skills training; career and employment readiness; educational resources and instruction; financial counseling; and other evidence-based and trauma-informed curricula for improved health and well-being. Our vision entails an ongoing thread of services that will bring these individuals to self-sufficiency, thriving in our community.

● Free in-house clinics for medical, vision, dental through collaboration with partner agencies
● Empowerment center offering various vocational/occupational training, gardening, financial counseling, and life-skills
● Arrange opportunities to voluntarily engage in fellowship and mentoring for personal growth
● Provide access to substance use treatment and recovery support; addiction/recovery classes/support available
● Coordinate outreach events in the community to bring food and services to the public
